The prison episode isn't included but it is alluded to, and fans of the show are likely to remember the McAllister business, from 1982 and later in 1986, very well.

The New Video series is drawn from all seven seasons of ''St. During a riot, McAllister, no longer the genteel mourner he was seasons earlier, helped hold Morrison down while he was raped by another prisoner. Eligius doctor named Jack Morrison (David Morse) was doing volunteer work in a prison when he encountered McAllister, who was serving time for killing Rhinehart. On most shows that would have been that, more or less, but in March 1986, more than three seasons later, a St. McAllister sought out the terrorist in the hospital and shot him dead - a shocking development in those pre-''E.R.'' days. The operation was a success, but two episodes later the bombing victim died. The man had less than an hour to notify relatives and secure permissions. On the bright side, Craig breezily announced that he was about to save him with a triple bypass.

With his arteries 94 percent clogged, the fellow was a walking dead man. Mark Craig (William Daniels), Eligius's totally assured chief surgeon, delivered bad news and good news to a pudgy patient suffering from chest pains.

In one strand of the tale, a psychiatrist worked with a patient who thought she was a bird (''I see we're Tweetie today''). Elsewhere'' from New Video, several story lines were taking shape in the layered, complex manner of the ''workplace family'' series, a genre introduced a season earlier by Steven Bochco in the cop series ''Hill Street Blues'' and carried on today in shows like ''N.Y.P.D. On other floors in that early episode, one of eight hourlong shows in a new boxed set of ''St. In another room, a young woman was dying, a victim of the terrorist's bomb, anguished over by her husband, Mr. Eligius, the worn old hospital called Elsewhere, a beleaguered institution on the bottom rung of Boston's famed medical establishment, lay a wounded terrorist named Rhinehart (Tim Robbins in the early stages of his career). Elsewhere'' was in its second episode and busily stirring the dramatic pot. Here's a terrific piece with interviews with the creative people involved in that final episode, and much of the series. I'll never forget the impact it had on me while watching it. I still have the VHS tape my sister made for me the night it aired, since I had to miss it for my after-school job at Wendy's. The show fittingly has one of the absolute best series finales in history. Up to then I liked half-hour comedies, and goofy 1-hour shows like 'The A-Team' or 'Dukes of Hazzard.' I can't recall why I started watching, but even then I knew this show was something very unique and special. I was around 15 when I started watching about midway through the show's run.

It was dramatic, emotional, quirky and often funny.įor me, it was the first 'serious' TV series I ever fell in love with. It had a specific cinematic look and design, weaved together dozens of complicated plot lines that challenged the viewer to pay attention week to week, and had one of the best ensemble casts in TV history. This show was unlike anything on network TV before. Elsewhere' the road to peak television would look different, IMHO. Now we're in 'peak television' with the overwhelming amount of quality programming being produced across so many platforms, but without 'St. I've seen NBC's 80s and 90s lineup called a second golden age for TV. Elsewhere' ran six seasons from 1982 to 1988.
